What is the relationship between the economics of nuclear power and the proliferation of nuclear weapons? When security and arms control analysts list what has helped keep nuclear weapons technologies from spreading further than they already have, energy economics are rarely, if ever, mentioned. In an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, "Insuring India's Nuclear Power", NPEC's executive director lays out the debate in India's parliament over the level of insurance U.S. nuclear companies are requesting its government provide them in the event of an accident, a clash that is likely to limit U.S. investment in the near term and benefit French and Russian firms.

Testimony of Peter A. Bradford Before the Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee
Former Nuclear Regulatory Commission member and present NPEC advisory board member Peter Bradford testified before the House Subcommittee for Domestic Policy in a hearing on federal loan guarantees for nuclear power and argued that it represents a risky bet for tax payers that will likely to hurt rather than help efforts to combat climate change.

NPEC Signed Letters to Congress Oppose Loan Guarantees for New Nuclear Power
NPEC co-signed a letter along with the National Taxpayers Union, Taxpayers for Common Sense and the Marshall Institute which urges the leadership of the House and Senate Subcommittees on Energy and Water Development not to give any additional loan guarantee authority to the Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Guarantee Program in the FY 2011 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill.

Congress Promotes WMD Commission Recommendation for Alternative Energy Peace Corps
Foreign Policy's "The Cable" blog reports that Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) and Congressmen Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) have introduced measures calling for an alternative energy Peace Corps in bills advancing both houses of Congress. This was a key recommendation of the Commission on the Prevention of WMD Proliferation and Terrorism on which NPEC's executive director serves. NPEC has also commented previously on Akaka's role in introducing legislation.
